Next up in our series on Regular Decision acceptance rates: the newly released Class of 2028 acceptance rate for the University of Virginia (UVA). Located in Charlottesville, Virginia, UVA was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819 and holds the distinction of being the only university in the United States to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jefferson’s architectural masterpiece, the Rotunda, serves as the centerpiece of the university, reflecting his admiration for classical design and Enlightenment ideals. Today, UVA continues to uphold its legacy of academic excellence, ranked the #5 Top Public School in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and has an undergraduate enrollment of about 17,500.
UVA EARLY ACCEPTANCE RATE
UVA received a record number of ED and EA applications in the fall with 42,093 students (1/3 in-state and 2/3 out-of-state) submitting applications for the Class of 2028. This is a 3.4 percent increase from last year. Of these early applicants, 37,665 were in the early action round and 4,465 applied early decision. Of the 4,465 ED applications, 1,133 were accepted (25.38 percent). Applications from first generation students dropped by 2 percent.
UVA OVERALL ACCEPTANCE RATE
Once again, UVA surpassed its application records this year, as the number of total applicants soared to 58,995, compared to 56,538 the previous year and 50,942 in 2022. During its non-binding early action cycle in February, UVA extended a warm welcome to an additional 6,541 students who submitted their applications. Overall, the University has issued 9,665 offers for the Class of 2028, aiming to enroll 3,970 first-year students.

TTA Takeaway: If you are not a resident of Virginia, your odds are similar in the Early Action and Regular Decision rounds but increase significantly in the binding Early Decision round. For in-state applicants, there is not the same strategic advantage by applying in the ED round vs. EA (30% versus 27%). However, waiting until the RD round will decrease your odds by almost half.
UVA’S CLASS OF 2028
In an official statement, Dean of Admission Greg Roberts celebrated the admitted students during such a competitive admissions cycle: “These are talented, inspiring and resilient students who have made a difference in their schools, their communities and in the lives of others, and we’re excited that many will join us on Grounds in the fall as first-year students. While we are unable to offer admission to every deserving student, we are deeply grateful to all applicants, and we wish them the very best as they complete their senior years and select a college home.”
Students admitted to UVA in the early action and regular decision cycles have until May 15 to make their final decision (an extension from the typical May 1 deadline due to FAFSA delays).
