Deferral/Denial

One decision doesn’t define what comes next.

A deferral or denial changes your application strategy. We help your family reassess, strengthen your application, and make the most of what comes next.

Comprehensive application review

ED2 and/or Regular Decision strategy

Guided by a former Admissions Officer

The weeks ahead matter more than the decision behind you.

A deferral means your student remains under consideration at that college. The admissions committee has postponed its final decision, not closed the door. Depending on the college’s policies, an appropriate response may include a strong Letter of Continued Interest, meaningful updates, and continued academic strength. Meanwhile, you must present yourself as a compelling candidate to other colleges too in the larger regular decision pool.

A denial calls for a different response. Although that application is closed, the broader admissions process still presents important opportunities if you reconsider both your strategy and application presentation. Your student can reassess their strategy and strengthen their remaining applications.

In either case, the few weeks between early application decisions and the remaining deadlines can be pivotal. Used wisely, this time allows families to consider how the application is being interpreted by admissions professionals, sharpen the essays and materials still within their control, revisit the college list where appropriate, and ensure that every remaining aspect of the application presents the clearest and most authentic picture of the student.

Seasoned Admissions Insight

Your student’s application is reviewed by our experienced college counselors, including former admissions officers with deep knowledge of how selective colleges assess candidates.

Focused, Individual Attention

Because this work takes place within a compressed December/January window, we limit capacity to ensure that each family receives responsive and highly personalized guidance.

A Strategic Path Forward

Recommendations are tailored to your student’s circumstances — a compelling Letter of Continued Interest, wise ED2 options, stronger Regular Decision applications, and, when necessary, a broader strategic retargeting of the college plan.

A complete professional assessment, and a clear plan for what comes next.

What’s included

  • A one-hour consultation with a Top Tier Admissions Senior Private Counselor
  • A customized, in-depth review of a school’s application materials, read by a former Admissions Officer
  • A personalized written assessment with clear revision priorities and specific recommendations
  • ED2 and/or Regular Decision strategy, including college-list considerations where appropriate
  • Strategy and comprehensive revision support for one Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI), when appropriate and permitted by the college

Inside your personalized assessment

The written report is the centerpiece of the Assessment. Created specifically for your student, it translates early results into a clear and detailed understanding of what may need to change and a prioritized plan for optimizing the applications still ahead. Our in-depth reports are customized for the specific needs of each applicant. They typically include:

  1. An admissions-informed evaluation of the early application, with insight into how it may have been received and where it may have fallen short.
  2. A section-by-section review of the Common Application, including academic rigor and school context, honors, activities, testing, academic interests, and additional information, with specific recommendations for revision.
  3. Detailed analysis of the personal statement and relevant supplemental essays, identifying what is working, what may need to be reframed, and what stronger versions should accomplish.
  4. A clear articulation of the student’s strongest authentic positioning, connecting academic interests, experiences, strengths, and future direction across the application.
  5. An assessment of college-specific positioning, including whether the application reflects a credible connection to the academic opportunities and character of the college.
  6. A revised ED2 and/or Regular Decision strategy, including where to focus, whether additional colleges should be considered, and where the current list may require recalibration.
  7. A prioritized action plan outlining what to retain, revise, replace, or further develop before the remaining deadlines.

Because every report contains highly individualized and confidential information, we do not publish or share sample reports.

The Deferral/Denial Assessment

$9,500

Assessment delivered within 48 hours of receiving your application materials, plus a one-hour consultation.

Two situations. One clear starting point.

If your student was deferred:

Your student remains under consideration. The Assessment identifies the most effective response to the deferral, which may include a calibrated Letter of Continued Interest, meaningful updates, and a strategy for reinforcing your student’s candidacy in accordance with the college’s policies. At the same time, our report will identify where any remaining applications can be strengthened, since you should not count on being accepted by your ED school once deferred.

If your student was denied:

That application is closed, but the broader admissions process is not. The Assessment looks closely at how the application may have been received, identifies areas that need greater clarity or a different presentation approach, and provides a focused plan for strengthening the student’s positioning, essays, college list, and remaining application strategy.

In either situation, the starting point is the same: a candid, admissions-informed assessment of where the application stands and a prioritized plan for what comes next.

Max

Max’s story — deferred from Northwestern, Early Decision

Max, a prospective pre-med student and Eagle Scout, reached out to Top Tier Admissions the day after being deferred from Northwestern in the Early Decision round. He was already a highly competitive applicant: a straight-A student ranked in the top 6% of a Texas high school class of more than 600 students, with eight AP courses and a 790 Math SAT score.

Our review found that the issue wasn’t Max’s qualifications, it was how they were presented. We identified opportunities to strengthen his application strategy, revise how his activities and experiences were conveyed, and rethink a personal statement that wasn’t fully capturing his intellectual curiosity or motivation for medicine.

Working quickly before the next round of deadlines, Max reimagined his application, developed stronger essays in his own voice, and repositioned his candidacy for Early Decision II.

He was admitted to Washington University in St. Louis, where he is now pursuing pre-med.

Common Questions

The answers, honestly.

Still have questions? A quick conversation is often the fastest way to find the clarity you need.

My student was deferred. Does that mean they will not get in?

No. A deferral means your student’s application remains under consideration, and many strong applicants are deferred each year at highly selective colleges before final decisions are made. Yet a deferral is never a guarantee of admission, and part of what the Assessment provides is a candid read on how much weight to place on it, so your family knows where to focus energy in the rounds ahead. Schools use deferrals differently. We provide school-specific context to help you understand where your student stands.

What exactly does the assessment include?

A detailed, highly individualized written evaluation of your student’s application, with specific, actionable guidance, plus a one-hour consultation to review the findings and set priorities. Deferred students also receive comprehensive revision support on their Letter of Continued Interest. The Assessment is designed to stand on its own, giving your family a clear plan to move forward.

How quickly do we need to act?

The window between early decisions and ED2/Regular Decision deadlines is short, so acting quickly matters. The Assessment is available for direct purchase, with a comprehensive report delivered within 48 hours of receiving your materials. The biggest risk is submitting remaining applications with the same approach that led to the first disappointing outcome.

Is it too late if my student was denied?

Not at all. An early denial is disappointing, but it does not define the rest of your student’s admissions journey. For denied students, the Assessment focuses on the work still ahead—identifying opportunities to strengthen essays, positioning, and overall strategy so your student can approach ED2 and/or Regular Decision as strongly as possible.

My student already has a school or independent counselor. What does this add?

This is not a second version of traditional college counseling. It is an admissions-informed diagnostic of the application your student actually submitted, drawing on the collective expertise of a team that includes former admissions officers from highly selective institutions. We assess how the application may have been received, identify what may have limited its effectiveness, and determine the highest-impact changes to make before the next round of decisions.

I’ve already submitted my other applications. Can this process still help?

Yes. While submitted applications cannot be revised, the Assessment can provide valuable insight into what may have limited your early application and inform additional letters of interest or other strategic updates. If you have not yet submitted your Regular Decision applications, we strongly recommend waiting until you understand what may have gone wrong in the early round and what should change before submitting again.
