Located in historic Charlottesville, the University of Virginia (UVA), a top-ranked public research university, rolled out a major update to its application beginning in the 2025–2026 admissions cycle. In previous years, every applicant had to write a supplemental essay about how their personal background would enrich the campus community. Now, UVA has streamlined the process significantly by eliminating the supplemental essay for most applicants. Only students applying directly to the School of Nursing must respond to an additional writing prompt.
How UVA Reviews School of Nursing Applicants
On its admissions website, UVA notes that “a student’s academic focus is only a factor when it applies to their choice of undergraduate school at UVA. First year applicants applying to the College of Arts & Sciences, and Schools of Architecture, Education (Kinesiology), Engineering, and Nursing are reviewed by separate admission teams.” For School of Nursing applicants, this means your application is read by a specialized admissions team looking specifically for your dedication to the healthcare field. Given that UVA typically enrolls a cohort of just 75 nursing students per year, crafting a compelling response to the writing supplement is key to making your application stand out.

How to Write the UVA Nursing Supplemental Essay
Our best advice? Dive right in. Share a specific moment that sparked your passion for healthcare, whether that’s a personal medical journey, caring for a loved one, a conversation with a teacher, or time spent volunteering in a hospital. Don’t just list your experience as if it were a resume bullet point. Instead, reflect on why that experience mattered and how it deepened your academic curiosity about nursing.
Admissions officers should be able to clearly see how your mindset shifted before and after this key moment. Think of this as the turning point in your narrative arc. What was your perspective on healthcare or your future before this moment occurred? Then, show how the encounter transformed your understanding. By contrasting who you were before with the insight you gained after, you show the reader that your decision to pursue nursing is intentional and reflective.
TTA Top Tip: Don’t forget to weave in the human side of healthcare. Successful nursing goes far beyond understanding medical protocols. It’s about stepping up as a patient advocate. Show the admissions committee that you possess the core qualities of a compassionate nurse, like empathy, patience, and a true commitment to treating the whole patient, not just the diagnosis.
Happy writing!
