The University of Virginia, commonly known as UVA, was founded by Thomas Jefferson in Charlottesville in 1819, and holds the distinction of being the only university in the United States to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UVA is consistently ranked one of the top public schools in the U.S. and is considered both a “Public Ivy” and “New Ivy.”
UVA ACCEPTANCE RATE
UVA accepted 11% of in-state applicants and 9% of out-of-state applicants during the regular decision round. The university’s overall acceptance rate for the Class of 2029 is 23% for Virginia residents and 12.5% for out-of-state residents, according to The Cavalier Daily.
UVA is bound by state laws to maintain an undergraduate population of two-thirds in-state students. There was an 8.5% increase in applications to UVA overall. The in-state applicant pool grew by 6.5% this year and the out-of-state applicant pool grew by 9.2%.
UVA’s early acceptance rate for the Class of 2029 was 29.5% for in-state students while the out-of-state acceptance rate was 21%.

TTA TOP TIP: If UVA is your top choice, and you’re an out-of-state applicant, applying during the early round can be extremely beneficial. UVA and other “Public Ivies” are continuing to surge in popularity, resulting in a more competitive applicant pool, especially for out-of-state students. UVA also offers a non-binding early round, which might be better for students who are concerned about their financial aid offer or who aren’t 100% certain that UVA is their best fit.
