As U.S. high schoolers read headlines about faculty layoffs, institutional trials, budget freezes, and visa crackdowns, many are looking abroad for a college experience free of political turmoil. Joining the ranks of the more historically popular UK university destinations like Oxford and Cambridge, Ireland has emerged as a new hotspot for college-bound Americans. And it’s not just Yeats and Joyce fans taking to the cobblestoned streets and pub-lined alleys: American interest in Irish universities has surged by 65 percent during the first quarter of 2025, the highest recorded growth of any destination of U.S. students (according to Studyportals analytics).
TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN (TCD)
Topping the QS World Rankings for Irish universities is Trinity College Dublin, a 47-acre campus in the heart of the capital city within walking distance of Silicon Docks, Dublin’s innovation hub and home of global headquarters for Google, Meta, Microsoft, Intel, Pfizer and HP. But more than its tech appeal, Dublin’s intellectual atmosphere beckons: in addition to its room-temperature Guinness and sites of Ulysses lore, Trinity is home to roughly 22,000 undergraduates, 35% of whom hail from international destinations.

TCD ACADEMICS
Trinity contains three “Faculties,” or divisions: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Health Sciences; and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Within these faculties are 24 Schools, representing disciplines as widely ranging as Russian and Slavonic Studies to Biblical Studies and Immunology to Zoology.
Most undergraduate degrees follow a four-year pathway, with students applying directly to their chosen course of study. General education requirements are minimal, allowing students to dive straight in from the start. Undergraduate courses culminate in a fourth-year capstone project such as an independent thesis or research project. Similar to American universities, TCD offers a “joint honours” degree (a.k.a. double major) and major-minor combinations, affording students a fair amount of interdisciplinary flexibility.
