Stanford University Admissions
Stanford University received 57,236 applications for the Class of 2028 and admitted 3.6 percent of applicants, a slight decline from the previous year’s 3.9 percent admission rate, when 2,099 students were offered spots. Remarkably, 81 percent of admitted students enrolled in the Class of 2027, underscoring Stanford’s strong yield rate.
Although test-optional for the Class of 2028, many applicants still submitted scores. The middle 50 percent SAT range was 1510–1570, and the ACT range was 34–35. Fourteen percent (237 students) of the incoming class are international citizens representing 70 countries—an average of about three students per country. Twenty-one percent are the first in their families to attend college, and women slightly outnumber men, 51 percent to 49 percent.
A majority of admitted students (56 percent) graduated from public high schools, 28 percent from private schools, 16 percent from schools outside the U.S., and fewer than 1 percent were homeschooled. Stanford does not release detailed test-optional submission data, nor does it publish early admissions statistics like many peer institutions. The university has stated that withholding these figures helps reduce the stress and hyper-competitiveness surrounding college admissions. Instead, it reports comprehensive data later through its annual Common Data Set, which for the Class of 2029 will be released in the 2025–26 academic year.
