Senior year is officially underway, and if your student’s college applications are still “in progress,” you’re in good company. Between a full course load, fall sports, and the last round of test dates, the Common App has a way of sliding to the bottom of the list. The problem is that early deadlines don’t slide with it. November 1 arrives whether the essays are done or not.
There’s another way to run this fall. Instead of stret ching the work across months of Sunday-night stress, some families choose to finish it in a matter of days. That’s the idea behind our Personal Application Boot Camp® (PABC): the same intensive curriculum as Top Tier’s flagship Application Boot Camp®, delivered one-on-one, virtually, and scheduled around your student’s calendar. A limited number of PABC spots open each year, and the program is built for exactly this moment, when the deadlines are real and the momentum matters.
Few people are better positioned to explain what happens inside those days than Nellie Brennan Hall. A Senior Private Counselor at Top Tier Admissions since 2022, Nellie spent years on the other side of the desk as an Associate Director of Admissions at Brown University, where she led selection committees and athletic admissions. She reads applications the way admissions officers read them, and she uses that lens with every PABC student she works with. We asked her what makes the format work, who thrives in it, and the advantages of finishing college applications ahead of senior year.
Meet Nellie: Former Brown Admissions Officer and PABC Counselor
A quick introduction before we get into her answers:
- Senior Private Counselor at Top Tier Admissions since 2022, with a focus on one-on-one Boot Camp work.
- Former Associate Director of Admissions at Brown University, where she led selection committees and oversaw athletic admissions.
- Former independent school college counselor, with a track record of guiding students to highly selective institutions.
- B.A. from Harvard, M.Ed. from Notre Dame, and Ed.M. in Higher Education from Harvard.
How long have you been a counselor for Top Tier Admissions?
I have been a Senior Private Counselor for Top Tier Admissions since 2022.
What do you love about counseling students in a Personal Application Boot Camp® format?
What I love about the PABC format is that students are able to focus completely on finishing their application in just a few days. Throughout my career, I have seen students drag this process on, and it becomes very stressful. By concentrating on just a few days, students not only feel the accomplishment of finishing their application, but the intense focus allows them to produce a better product overall. Working one-on-one with a counselor also gives students the attention and guidance to think about their application more holistically.
What are the benefits of PABC?
Along with what I said above, the PABC feels like a team effort. Instead of the student feeling alone in the process of crafting their Common Application and essays, they have someone working with them every step of the way. They can have the confidence that the counselor’s expertise will guide them through the process to produce the best possible application and narrative.
What kind of student would be successful in a PABC program?
Students who do best in this program are motivated. They need to be able to set aside the days to do the work, because these are true working days. A student who is results-oriented and willing to work hard for a few days in order to receive great results will thrive in this program.
What do you most enjoy about PABC?
I love working closely with students to craft their narrative and understand what they valued in their high school experience. I have come to know every PABC student I have had very well in just a few days. A student’s feeling of accomplishment when the PABC is finished is so exciting to see!
Is PABC the Right Fit for Your Student?
Nellie’s answers point to a simple pattern. The students who get the most out of PABC aren’t necessarily the ones with the longest activity lists or the clearest career plans. They’re the ones who are ready to commit a few focused days and want a finished application on the other side. If your student has been circling the essay for weeks, or if senior fall is already crowded with commitments that can’t move, that kind of concentrated push is often exactly what breaks the logjam.
Personal Application Boot Camp® Deliverables:
- A completed Common Application, including the activities section.
- An authentic, finalized personal statement your student will be proud to submit.
- A clear, consistent narrative that connects academics, activities, and essays into a compelling story an admissions committee wants to read.
- A suite of supplemental essays complete, plus the confidence and know-how to tackle any additional supplements that come up later.
- A strategic school list built for Early Round optimization.
- The rest of senior year back, with the heaviest lift finished before early deadlines arrive.
