Middlebury College, a small liberal arts college in Vermont, has an average class size of just 16 and is well known for its foreign language programs. Middlebury saw a 6% drop in application volume to the Class of 2029 compared to last year.
MIDDLEBURY ACCEPTANCE RATE: CLASS OF 2029
Middlebury’s overall acceptance rate increased to 13.9% from last year’s 12%. This is partially due to the college increasing the size of its incoming first year class in order to generate more revenue and increase the total student enrollment to around 2,600-2,650, according to The Middlebury Campus.
The college received a record high number of international student applications, and admitted students from 73 countries — 22 countries more than the Class of 2028 — who speak 95 different languages.
This was Middlebury’s fifth year being test-optional and 44% of admitted students to the Class of 2029 did not submit their scores. This policy has been extended to at least the Class of 2030.
Middlebury faced a recent drop in ranking this year, with the U.S. News & World Report ranking Middlebury the 19th best liberal arts college in the country — eight spots lower than it was last year.

TTA Expert Insight
“The US News and World Report rankings are far from perfect, and their usefulness as an indicator of college quality has increasingly come under fire in recent years. Flaws aside, these rankings are still relied upon by families as a tool in the college search process. For this reason, Middlebury needs to take a hard look at the root cause(s) of this noticeable drop and assess what changes, if any, need to be made.”
