Duke University, a private institution in Durham, North Carolina, admitted 847 of 6,159 Early Decision applicants to the Class of 2030 for an early acceptance rate of 13.8%, according to the Duke Chronicle. This rate marks an increase from last year’s record-low 12.8%—a result of fewer applications rather than more admits. Still, the Early Decision pathway continues to offer a significant advantage: last year, Duke admitted 12.8% of ED applicants compared to just 3.67% in the Regular Decision round.
Duke Early Acceptance Rate
Early Decision applications decreased from 6,627 to 6,159 this cycle, while the number of admits remained stable at 847—consistent with Duke’s historical pattern of admitting between 806 and 855 students in the early round. The 13.8% early acceptance rate remains far below pre-2023 levels, when ED acceptance hovered above 16%, due to sustained application growth following Duke’s 2023 Carolinas Financial Aid Initiative.
| Class | ED Apps | ED Admits | ED Rate | Overall Rate |
| 2030 | 6,159 | 847 | 13.8% | TBD |
| 2029 | 6,627 | 849 | 12.8% | 4.8% |
| 2028 | 6,240 | 806 | 12.9% | 5.1% |
| 2027 | 5,232 | 855 | 16.4% | 6.0% |
While Early Decision rates have fluctuated with application volume, overall acceptance rates, by contrast, have remained stable in a narrow band between 4.8% and 6%. If these patterns hold, we expect the Class of 2030 overall rate to fall within a similar range when Regular Decision results are announced in the spring.
Application Boot Camp®
Need strategic guidance from start to finish?
Of the 847 admitted students, 80% will enroll in Trinity College of Arts and Sciences while the remainder will join the Pratt School of Engineering, which is ranked #17 nationally for undergraduate engineering programs. Pratt’s Biomedical Engineering program ranks #3 in the nation, and the school’s signature First-Year Design experience allows students to work on real-world engineering challenges from day one. According to Duke’s admissions office, “We’re looking for students ready to respond to [Duke’s] opportunities intelligently, creatively, and enthusiastically.”
TTA Top Tip: Duke remains test-optional for the 2025–2026 cycle, but nearly half of enrolled students in recent years have submitted SAT scores and roughly a third have submitted ACT scores. For students with strong scores, submitting them can strengthen an application. For those without, the focus shifts to other elements: a compelling narrative, strategic activity selection, and authentic essays that demonstrate the “ambition and curiosity, talent and persistence, energy and humanity” Duke seeks.
