What does TTA graduate school admissions consulting include?

Any or all of the following, depending on your needs: Assistance and guidance with university, program and department options, faculty advisor reach outs, campus visits (virtual and on site), input on test scores to aim for per program, applications and essays including statement of purposes, personal statement, diversity statement, writing sample prep, input and ideas on how to boost up your research foundation (conferences, publications, research exposure and experience), resumes, CVs, final application review, interview prep, mock interviewing on Zoom, fellowship, scholarship and internship applications, and school/program selection.

I’m still in college but grad school is my next step. Is it too early to pursue graduate school admissions consulting?

No!  We work with students who are about to start freshman year of college (helping them plan their paths in terms of academic, research, leadership and professional pursuits) all the way up through working professionals who are 20 years into their careers and planning to apply to graduate school.

Can I do a free call with you to understand more about what you offer?

Yes, of course! We are happy to offer a phone or Zoom call to relay more information on our approach as well as help you select the best program for you. We’d also urge taking a look at our 20 Tips for Selecting a Grad School Admissions Consultant.

My undergrad GPA isn’t where I wanted it to be. Can I still get into grad school with a low GPA?

Yes, you can and we’ve helped many do this. We have a longer answer to this one and it’s here

Do you offer mock interviewing? How about guidance on how to reach out to faculty to forge connections with possible advisors (and faculty) before my application goes out?

Yes, we do!  You can use your hours with us (as part of any of our graduate admissions consulting programs) on mock interview prep via Zoom as well as drafting emails and reaching out to secure meetings with faculty at your targeted programs.  We’ll walk you through the entire process!

I have no idea where to apply. Can you help me craft a list?

Of course! Many of our students have a few targeted programs on their radar (though some have zero!), but they’d like additional ideas. We work to get to know you and what you’re seeking in a program as we want to help you find a great fit.  We’ll propose reach, in range and backup programs, factoring in your geographic preferences, program type, etc.

I want to apply to law schools AND Masters programs, or Masters programs AND PhD programs.  Do you offer that?

We do! A fair amount of our students are considering two types of programs and that’s perfectly ok.  We help you chart out what you’ll need for each application and help you get a plan in place to maximize your odds.

How have TTA graduate school applicants fared in graduate school admissions recently, given that Covid has pushed more to apply to grad school, law school and med school than ever before?

Our recent students have secured acceptances to some of the top MBA, Masters, PhD, law schools and medical schools in the country. These include programs such as: Stanford’s MBA program, Columbia Medical School, UPenn Law, and Yale GSAS, as well as many wonderful graduate programs outside of the Ivy League.

Why do college students need career and academic advising?

We offer career planning and academic advising to help students maximize their time in college. Recent studies show 50-70% of college students used a college admissions consultant in some capacity to help them get into college, and having a coach in your corner once you’re enrolled can go a long way when you’re living away from home.

We assist with navigating course planning, researching and selecting a major and minor, exploring research opportunities, study abroad programs, clubs and on-campus activities, and work experience. We serve as a personal support system helping students navigate challenges as a college student and manage stress.

What is the focus of the Career and Academic Advising Program?

Our goal is to help students explore different college pathways, pinpoint personal strengths and skills, and make informed decisions that boost their academic and professional resume. We help students maximize their college investment.

Who needs career development and academic advising?

This program serves current college students, high school graduates, and graduate school applicants at any level.

Isn’t my college advisor at my university enough?

The U.S. Department of Education states, degree advisors exist at the institution solely for the purpose of helping the students, though you must seek them out yourself. It is upon the student to seek out appropriate resources and ask the questions they need answered.” Today’s college students already bear heavy loads on their scholarly shoulders and Inside Higher Ed reported that just 55 percent of U.S. college students noted they’ve been advised on required coursework for graduation.

Today’s college students deserve more.

What sets our program apart from an assigned advisor at college is one on one attention, time and devotion to the student. We take on a very limited number of students in this program in order to lighten a college student’s load and serve as a resource in their corner. When living away from home, a strategic advisor is imperative for college student retention, support and success. Our advising is much more than academic planning; it’s goal setting, resource navigation, learning how to make the most of campus culture and college expectations while still staying true to yourself, winter and summer break planning, serving as your advocate, graduation preparation, and personal support.

Can you help me pick a major and/or minor?

Yes! We’ll engage in a dialogue about your interests, strengths, weakness, field experience to date and academic areas of interest that sound exciting to you. Choosing a major can feel overwhelming. Let’s say you’re at a school like Columbia University. You’re looking at 21 schools within Columbia and over 100 undergraduate majors. Once you’re on campus, at a certain point, your advisor says “Here’s the list, now go, CHOOSE.”

We’ll chat about fields you are curious about and courses you are hungry to get into. From Environmental Studies to Business to French Literature to Political Science, we’ll assist with reviewing course requirements, curriculum requirements, and core courses to complete to ensure you don’t miss pre-reqs and help you ensure you graduate on time with a major and/or minor that positions you for success post-degree. On average, in the U.S., college students switch their majors three times. That can be costly in time, effort and too many core classes soaking up your semesters. Let us help you consider and reflect on what you truly love and craft a plan together.

I’m still have no idea what I want to be “when I grow up” —can you assist with that?

Of course! Most (up to 85%) of the jobs in the world in the year 2030 have not yet been invented! We’ll work to coach you on carving out a standout college experience that is intellectually rewarding, adaptable in an ever-changing job market, and fosters your intellectual and social growth.

We will help you determine what you love to do, what areas you might want to eventually work in, and help you identify fields you’ll thrive in academically, professionally and personally.

The college club fair is coming up and there are over 500 choices —can you help me pick which ones are worth joining?

Yes! We’ll discuss options on your campus for not just clubs but unique extracurricular opportunities, social and campus events, affinity groups, conferences and more and help you uncover what aligns with your personal preferences and schedule. Our ideas are backed by our in-house tracking with 22+ years of consulting experience with students. We know which activities have benefitted our past and current college students and graduate school applicants the most.

I have no research experience but I know I need some —can you help?

Yes, we will help you pinpoint your research interests, identify faculty engaged in research projects, studies and papers that are intriguing to you, and offer informed input and guidance on how to reach out to them (with samples!). We’ll also make personalized suggestions on unique research fellowships, lab placement opportunities, publication opportunities and conference presentation funding at your university and coach you through those applications. We assist with research assistantship and internship applications at your college and beyond, and offer personalized ideas of conferences, peer-reviewed journals, calls for submissions and more.

I need to plan my summer break but don’t know where you start —can you research some ideas for me and help me apply?

Yes! We can create personalized lists for you to vet through with summer jobs and internships based on keywords and job titles we identify together, factoring in job roles of interest to you, while factoring in your geographic and schedule preferences. Then, we’ll offer sample successful cover letters, cover letter and resume templates and editing to coach you through the process of submitting applications. This will be done in a timely fashion to help ensure you have your pick of productive, gratifying, fulfilling summer opportunities.
