Hidden Gem Colleges for Transfer Students

If you’ve decided to transfer colleges, you may already have a short list of target schools, perhaps inspired by where your friends are thriving or by a lingering attachment to “the one that got away” from your first application cycle. Whether you’re reapplying to a dream school or searching for a campus that’s a better academic and social fit, it’s worth looking beyond name recognition. Some of the best colleges for transfer students are hidden gems: universities with generous transfer credit policies, strong support systems for transfer students, and higher transfer acceptance rates that make a successful transition more likely.

Why Transfer Credit Policies Matter for Graduating on Time

With all the factors to consider as you make your list of transfer schools, you may not be thinking about how many credits you’ll be able to transfer. Yet this factor may make the difference in extending your college graduation date or enabling you to graduate on time. Schools with official and accessible articulation agreements (stating which classes will transfer and how they will meet graduation requirements) simplify this process. The online tool Transferology can be invaluable in helping you assess how 400+ colleges may award credit for your coursework. While the most “generous” institutions—those that accept the most transfer credits—tend to be online/alternative institutions like Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), some traditional brick-and-mortar universities also make this “best of” list by making credit transfer look easy.

Colleges That Make the Transfer Transition Easier

Just as transfer-credit policies might not have topped your list of factors to consider, have you thought about what that first day, first week, first month will be like once you transfer schools? How will you register for classes? Will you meet other transfer students? What about mentorship as you navigate a new campus and new academic environment? These schools stand out for their efforts to help transfer students find and make a home on their new campus.

Universities With Exceptional Transfer Student Support Programs

  • Clemson University: As a big-time football school, maybe it’s not surprising that Clemson offers “Transfer Coaching” to connect transfer students with a dedicated staff member who will serve as a guide throughout their time on campus. Going a step further, the Transfer 2 Tiger (T2T) Mentor Program connects new transfers with transfer students in upper grades to support a sense of belonging and community. Finally, Clemson’s Transfer Council provides this population with a permanent voice in student government.
