University of Miami Reinstates Standardized Testing

The University of Miami has announced a significant policy update for prospective students. Starting with the Fall 2026 application cycle, undergraduate applicants will once again be required to submit standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) as part of their application. This marks a shift from the test-optional policy adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

University officials explained that the reinstatement of this policy is intended to provide an additional data point in their holistic review process. Guillermo “Willy” Prado, interim executive vice president for academic affairs and provost, emphasized that while standardized test scores can predict academic success, they are only one part of the admissions puzzle. Other factors, such as high school performance, extracurricular activities, and personal statements, will remain central to the evaluation process.

This move aligns the University of Miami with other prominent institutions that have recently reinstated similar requirements, including Brown University, Dartmouth College, Cornell University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In Florida, public colleges already mandate standardized test scores for admissions.

What Does This Mean for College Admissions?

The decision reflects a broader trend among universities re-evaluating the role of standardized testing in admissions. While test-optional policies provided greater flexibility during the pandemic, institutions like the University of Miami are now leveraging test scores as an additional metric to assess applicants.

For students, this underscores the importance of preparing for and performing well on standardized tests, even as other elements of their application remain critical. It also signals a shift in the college admissions landscape, as some institutions return to traditional metrics while others maintain test-optional policies.
