Columbia University, an Ivy League institution in New York City, received 5,497 Early Decision applications to the Class of 2030, down from 5,872 last cycle, according to the Columbia Spectator. This continues a two-year downward trend—a notable departure from peer institutions, many of which saw application surges this year.
Columbia University Early Acceptance Rate
Early Decision applications have dropped from a peak of 6,009 for the Class of 2028, likely reflecting ongoing campus tensions and Columbia’s 2023 decision to withdraw from the U.S. News & World Report rankings. Despite fewer applicants, competition remains fierce—Columbia’s overall acceptance rate has held steady near 4%.
| Class | ED Apps | ED Admits | ED Rate | Overall Rate |
| 2030 | 5,497 | TBD | TBD | TBD |
| 2029 | 6,007 | 795 | 13.2% | 3.86% |
| 2028 | 6,009 | 750 | 12.5% | 3.85% |
| 2027 | 5,733 | 840 | 14.6% | 3.9% |
Columbia does not release Early Decision admit numbers until the Common Data Set is published in fall. However, if the university admits a similar number of ED applicants as in recent years (750–840 of roughly 2,500 total admits annually), the smaller applicant pool could push the ED acceptance rate above 14%—the highest since the Class of 2027. Of those admitted to the Class of 2029, a record 1,806 chose to enroll, making it the largest incoming class in university history. Whether this expansion becomes permanent—the university is considering a 20% enrollment increase, per the Columbia Spectator—could reshape the admissions landscape and ease pressure on the small, discussion-based Core Curriculum seminars that define the Columbia College experience.
Application Boot Camp®
Need strategic guidance from start to finish?
Columbia remains the only Ivy League institution with a permanently test-optional policy, adopted in March 2023. While Dartmouth, Yale, Brown, Cornell, and Harvard have returned to requiring scores, Columbia has held firm. Still, 44% of enrolled students submitted SAT scores and 17% submitted ACT scores—suggesting competitive applicants continue to view testing as an advantage.
TTA Top Tip: Columbia’s Core Curriculum—the first general education program in the United States—remains central to the Columbia College experience. All students take Literature Humanities and University Writing in their first year, followed by Contemporary Civilization and Art or Music Humanities as sophomores. These small, discussion-based seminars cover texts from Homer to Toni Morrison and thinkers from Plato to W.E.B. Du Bois, creating a shared intellectual foundation across majors. For applicants, this means Columbia seeks students who thrive in discussion, embrace challenging texts, and demonstrate curiosity across disciplines—not just depth in one area. When crafting your application, show how you engage with big ideas and diverse perspectives.
