When Does the Common App Open? What Rising Seniors Should Do Before August 1

The Common App opens August 1. But the most prepared rising seniors don’t wait until then to get started.

After AP tests and final exams, it’s important to take a moment to pause and reset after making it through a notoriously rigorous school year. But early summer is also the perfect time to get ahead on college applications, and there’s more you can accomplish before August 1 than most students realize.

The Common App platform is used by over 1,000 colleges and universities worldwide, meaning chances are high you’ll use it to submit at least one application. Waiting until it opens to begin your work, however, can create unnecessary stress heading into a fall semester already packed with classes, schoolwork, and deadlines.

The good news? Students who start early find that senior fall feels far more manageable and far less chaotic. One of our favorite pieces of advice for rising seniors: starting your Common App early is one of the greatest gifts you can give your future self

Whether you’re a rising senior in New York, Dubai, Boston, or anywhere in the world, this guide walks you through exactly what you can and should be doing right now.

When Does the Common App Open?

The Common App officially refreshes for the new application cycle on August 1 each year. Most colleges update their supplemental essay prompts, application requirements, and deadlines around that time.

While some parts of the application may shift slightly, much of the platform remains the same from year to year. That means students can get a major head start during the summer.

What Rising Seniors Can Do Before August 1

August 1 is a milestone in a longer process, not the moment preparation should begin. Here’s what you can accomplish before the Common App officially opens:

Begin filling out the Common App. Students can create an account and start working on the core sections: general profile, family, and academic information, at any time. These sections remain largely consistent year to year, so what you complete now simply carries forward. It’s one of the easiest and most effective head starts you can give yourself.

Build your college list. Research schools, visit campuses virtually or in person, and assemble a balanced range of reach, match, and likely schools that align with your academic goals and campus life preferences. Summer is an ideal time for visits — just note that campuses may feel quieter with fewer students around. It’s still a great opportunity to demonstrate interest, particularly for Early Action schools that are paying attention

Request recommendation letters. Reach out to recommenders by late June, ideally, you’ll leave junior year having already asked at least two teachers. Share your list of activities, honors, and achievements to help them write letters that truly stand out

Draft your activities list. The Common App allows space for up to ten activities. Start with a full inventory of everything you’ve done throughout high school, then spend the summer refining and sharpening your descriptions until the final ten powerfully reflect your leadership, community impact, and academic direction.

Brainstorm and draft your personal statement. Your 650-word personal statement goes to every school you apply to and the 2026–2027 essay prompts are already live. Use June to explore and brainstorm, July to draft and refine, and seek feedback before August arrives. Starting early gives you the time to craft a personal statement that is thoughtful, intentional, and truly yours.

Prepare for supplemental essays. Most school-specific supplements aren’t released until August 1 but the themes are predictable. Practice drafting responses to common prompts: why you’re drawn to a specific school, a community or identity that matters to you, or an intellectual experience that shaped your thinking. You’ll have strong templates ready to refine the moment prompts go live.

Your Common App Questions Answered

When does the Common App open for 2026–2027?

The Common App officially opens for the 2026–2027 application cycle on August 1, 2026. One important note: August 1st is notoriously one of the busiest days on the platform, and technical glitches and temporary crashes are not uncommon as thousands of students log on simultaneously. Another great reason to have as much of your application prepared in advance as possible — so that when the platform is ready, you are too.

Can I start my Common App before August 1?

Absolutely! In fact, there are components of the Common App that you can fill in now like the Profile and Family sections, before it “rolls over” on August 1 for the upcoming cycle. Save your future self time by completing those components early.

What should rising seniors do over the summer before college applications?

In addition to starting to work on the Common App, students can get ahead by going on college tours, outlining and drafting key essays, and refining their Activity List.

When should I request recommendation letters

To give your recommenders plenty of time to write their letters, it’s best practice to request your recommendation letters before the end of junior year.

How can parents support their students during the summer?

Parents play a meaningful role in setting the tone for a productive and low-stress summer ahead of application season. Beyond logistics like thoughtfully planning college visits and being a sounding board for essay ideas, the most impactful thing a parent can do is give their student space to process and own their college journey. We go deeper on this in our guide: How Parents Can Support Their Child During the Summer Before Senior Year.
