I’ve recently fielded many questions from middle school parents who are curious about how private counseling could help their younger students. As a parent of middle schoolers, I know from personal experience that it is a time full of intellectual, personal, and social change. At Top Tier Admissions, we capitalize on these changes, build confidence, and help students develop their unique identity through our Top Tier Futures program.
HOW TO MAXIMIZE MIDDLE SCHOOL: OUR MOST POPULAR PARENT QUESTIONS
- My child doesn’t have any unique interests, how can you help them develop a passion?
Most middle school students haven’t been exposed to many different academic and extracurricular opportunities to help them find their areas of interest. Because of this, they can appear bored in school or uninterested in the mainstream activities offered to them. At Top Tier Admissions, we tap into our students’ curiosity, broadening their academic world and exploring new and unique options for extracurriculars. Because our program is personalized, we work with students to find activities in their local area and empower them to try new things that will resonate with their early interests and natural strengths!

- How will you get my child excited about academic extracurriculars at a young age?
Middle school students often don’t have many options for academic extracurriculars at their schools. It’s possible they may have a math team, robotics team, or writing club, but many students don’t fit into these narrow boxes. Middle school students will get excited about academic extracurriculars when they fit their interests, so we work with them to find a range of local and virtual options. Another consideration is that middle school students are often very aware of social constructs around certain activities, so they may be more reticent to join something publicly. In this case, working on an independent project with personalized mentorship could be a great opportunity for academic growth.
- What will you work on seeing as my child isn’t yet in high school?
So much about middle school is building confidence. With these students, we encourage them to attempt new things in both the academic and extracurricular worlds, but we also provide a support system. We may work on a project for a local science fair or history day competition, where a student may earn recognition for their achievement. We encourage all our students to submit writing for publication, building their skills and boosting their confidence. Our students also work on vocabulary, reading, and advancing in mathematics and foreign language. Finally, we also have students consider causes that resonate with them: are they concerned about climate change? Women’s rights? Educational equality? We help them learn more about those issues and then get involved on a local level.
- Will this investment now pay off later for my child? How?
Of course! While your child likely won’t be lining up SAT tutors or enrolling in AP courses, much of the work we do in middle school lays the groundwork for a successful high school career. Not only do we build confidence so students hit the ground running in high school, but we also have instilled valuable habits. Our middle school students learn how to complete independent projects step by step, they have built a knowledge base in an area that excites them, and they have established a practice for vocabulary, reading, and math enrichment. Our students also know how to identify opportunities that can further their knowledge and achievement, and they take chances on them, knowing that they have had success in the past. This leads our middle school students to be well-poised to excel in high school and take advantage of unique ways to deepen their academic and extracurricular life.
- Our child wants to apply to private high schools–what’s our first step?
There are a few things to consider when looking at private schools. The first is understanding what type of school would be the best fit for your child. Ask yourself questions like: Would they thrive in a boarding school environment or day school? Do you prefer a particular religious or philosophical approach to education? What size school would my child excel in? Be sure to visit schools and communicate with current students and parents. Finally, private school admissions can be competitive, so consider how your child might stand out in those pools and work to differentiate them early. This will not only help them find their own identity, but also boost their chances of admission.
