At Top Tier Admissions, we often get asked, “Can you help me choose a passion project?” or “What’s the best capstone for my college applications?” While we understand why students and parents want guidance in this area, we believe it’s important to clarify why we don’t assign passion projects.
WHY WE DON’T ASSIGN A PASSION PROJECT
1. Your Passion Project Needs to Be Your Passion
A true passion project isn’t something that’s assigned or dictated by someone else. It’s something that stems from your own interests, values, and curiosity. For a project to stand out in the eyes of admissions officers, it needs to reflect your genuine interests and personal growth. If we were to assign you a passion project, it would undermine the whole point of the exercise: helping you find something that lights you up from the inside out.
2. Authenticity Shines Through
Admissions committees are not looking for the perfect project—they’re looking for authenticity. A project that you’re genuinely passionate about, whether it’s launching a nonprofit, researching a unique scientific topic, or even creating a garden with local seniors, reveals your true character. The best passion projects are those that reflect your curiosity and determination, and they don’t need to be impressive on paper—they need to be meaningful to you.
3. Your Growth Matters More Than the Outcome
Passion projects are about personal growth and learning. The process itself is what helps you develop critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and resilience. If we were to assign a project to you, it would shift the focus away from your growth and place it instead on meeting someone else’s expectations. College admissions officers want to see how you’ve challenged yourself, how you’ve overcome obstacles, and what you’ve learned—not just the outcome of the project.
4. You Have the Freedom to Create
One of the greatest benefits of the college admissions process is the opportunity to explore your interests freely. You have the chance to craft your own experiences, discover new passions, and pursue something that excites you. We’re here to guide you through that process—helping you reflect, plan, and develop a strategy—but not to prescribe a project.
5. A Truly Memorable Project Comes from Within
The passion project that truly stands out is one that aligns with your long-term goals, your values, and your unique perspective. It’s something you can talk about with excitement and conviction because it means something deep to you. When you take the initiative to create a project, you demonstrate leadership, initiative, and a commitment to the things that matter to you. These are the qualities that admissions officers are seeking.

We believe that the college admissions process is about more than checking boxes or impressing admissions officers. It’s about discovering who you are, what drives you, and how you can contribute to the world.
Instead of assigning you a passion project, we’ll help you identify high-impact activities and initiatives that are right for you.
The most meaningful passion projects come from within, and we’re here to guide you through the process of finding, developing, and executing something that speaks to your heart—and, ultimately, to the hearts of college admissions committees.

One reply on “Why We Won’t Assign You a Passion Project”
What a great message. And how does an applicant feel knowing that he/she has engaged in a completely manufactured endeavor to gain admission somewhere? At least in the long run, probably not too great (for most). I think parents know best where their children’s passions lie and encouragement in those areas- whether by a parent or a mentor- are going to garner the best results for that person, both in admissions and in life. Good job TTA!
