Where Do Billionaires Go to College?

When working with students, we focus on both where they can get in and which college would be the best fit. Attending prestigious institutions like Princeton or Harvard doesn’t guarantee graduating at the top of your class. However, over the years, we’ve noticed that certain top colleges often fast-track students into the upper echelons of the financial world. This is similar to how entering the armed services as an officer accelerates your career progression compared to enlisting as a non-officer.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN TOP COLLEGES AND FINANCIAL SUCCESS

Forbes recently reported on the “Top Colleges for Billionaires,” revealing that almost a quarter of the 813 billionaires in the United States graduated from just 12 universities. These include the University of Pennsylvania with 36, Stanford with 33, Harvard with 28, and Yale with 19. While becoming a billionaire is not the sole definition of success, and many students from various colleges around the country go on to become successful doctors, lawyers, educators, researchers, and entrepreneurs, this clear correlation is noteworthy.

THE IVY LEAGUE PIPELINE IN FINANCE

For students devoted to financial fields like investment banking and private equity, there is a noticeable pipeline. Graduates from top Ivy League schools tend to hire from the same institutions, consolidating wealth into narrow areas. These wealthy graduates often give generously to their alma maters, reinforcing the wealth build-up. Additionally, they recruit heavily from a small subset of top schools.

SUCCESS BEYOND IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS

It’s important to note that attending an Ivy League school is not a prerequisite for becoming wealthy or successful, or living a fulfilled life. Success can come from various paths: some inherit money or take over family businesses, while others attend lesser-known schools and succeed through entrepreneurial ventures.

THE VALUE OF CONNECTIONS

Rather than focusing solely on making money, it’s crucial to emphasize areas of personal interest and exploration. The connections made at top colleges often make the investment worthwhile. As our business school contacts tell us, a significant part of the game is relying on your alumni network to “pick up the phone” when you need job assistance. These lifelong connections are a major draw of many of the nation’s top colleges.

Making an informed decision about where to attend college is crucial. It’s not just about the prestige but also about where you will thrive and build a network that will support your career goals.
