My visit to UT Austin recently was anything but sunny. It poured nonstop, but instead of dampening my experience, the rain gave me a fresh perspective on campus life. Here’s what I learned, rain-soaked shoes and all.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: A CAMPUS FULL OF ENERGY
Despite the overcast skies, the University of Texas at Austin buzzed with energy. Students walked between classes, gathered in coffee shops, and congregated near the iconic UT Tower. The energy on campus was palpable, offering a glimpse into the rhythm of daily life at one of the nation’s premier public universities.
The scale of UT Austin is equally striking. With approximately 40,000 undergraduates, the university fosters a dynamic and diverse student community. This sense of belonging is reflected in its impressive 96.7% first-year retention rate—students come here, and they stay. There’s something about UT Austin that makes it difficult to leave.
ADMISSIONS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Getting into UT Austin is no easy feat. With an 11% acceptance rate, competition is fierce. Standardized tests are required, and the university doesn’t superscore, so your best single-test score is what counts. Key deadlines include:
- Early Action: October 15 (expect some deferrals!)
- Final Deadline: December 1
- Texas Auto-Admission: If you’re in the top 5% of your Texas high school class (starting fall 2026), you’re guaranteed admission—though not necessarily your preferred major.
HIDDEN GEMS AT UT AUSTIN
UT Austin isn’t just about academics; it’s a treasure trove of culture. The university boasts 12 libraries (yes, there’s one inside the UT Tower!) and 8 museums, each offering something unique. I didn’t have time to explore them all, but a few stood out:
- Blanton Museum of Art – A world-class collection that I could’ve spent hours in.
- Harry Ransom Center – Home to a Gutenberg Bible and countless historical archives.
- Texas Memorial Museum – A must-visit if you love fossils and Texas natural history. I’m already planning to bring my grandson here later this week.
Beyond the official attractions, I stumbled upon a few hidden gems that made campus feel more personal:
- Littlefield Fountain – A picturesque spot, perfect for a quick moment of reflection (or a rainy-day photo!).
- Battle Hall Library – The oldest library on campus, with an old-world charm straight out of Harry Potter.
- The Turtle Pond – A peaceful escape tucked away in the greenery, where students pause between classes.
- The Iconic UT Tower:
- Constructed in 1934, standing at 307 feet
- Bells chime every 15 minutes, a beloved campus tradition
- Illuminated in burnt orange to celebrate student academic and athletic achievements

A UNIQUE FRESHMAN EXPERIENCE: TAKE THE WORLD BY THE HORNS
One of the most exciting opportunities at UT Austin is Take the World by the Horns, a program that allows freshmen to study abroad during their very first semester. It’s rare to see a school encourage global learning so early, and it makes UT stand out in a big way.
STANDOUT MAJORS: WHERE UT AUSTIN EXCELS
With so many students, UT offers an impressive range of majors. Some are particularly competitive due to high demand, including:
- McCombs School of Business – One of the top business programs in the country.
- Cockrell School of Engineering – Known for rigorous programs in biomedical, electrical, and computer engineering.
- Computer Science – A sought-after major with strong ties to Austin’s booming tech industry.
For students with interdisciplinary interests, the Humanities Major is a fascinating option. You can design your own degree, blending fields like history, literature, political science, and cultural studies. Some examples of customized paths students have created include:
- Health, Society, and the Humanities – A mix of anthropology, medical humanities, and history for those interested in public health.
- Global Conflict and Human Rights – Analyzing war, law, and diplomacy through history and international relations.
- Theater and Social Change – Exploring how performance has been used to challenge social and political norms.

RAINY DAY TAKEAWAYS
Despite the rain, UT Austin proved itself as a campus that shines in any weather. Here’s what stuck with me most:
- The campus is built for surprises. Whether it’s a sudden rainstorm or a change in academic interests, UT Austin has plenty of nooks to explore and resources to support students.
- Longhorn spirit is unshakable. Rain didn’t keep students from going about their day, hanging out in study spaces, or grabbing coffee at local spots. Life here doesn’t slow down.
- It’s a place where you can find your own rhythm. Whether you’re drawn to the arts, sciences, business, or humanities, UT Austin offers the space and flexibility to make your college experience your own.
