The early admissions landscape for the 2024–2025 application cycle has been marked by notable shifts in applicant behavior, evolving institutional priorities, and regional dynamics. Insights from the Common App report, along with trends highlighted in recent articles from elite universities, provide a comprehensive picture of what students and families can expect this year. Let’s dive in to see what the data tells us.
EARLY COLLEGE APPLICATION TRENDS: CLASS OF 2029
Record-High Applicant Numbers Signal Increased Competition (Yet again!)
The Common App reported a 6% increase in unique applicants and a 10% rise in total applications year-over-year. With students casting wider nets, applying to an average of seven institutions each, competition continues to intensify.
However, according to Yale Daily News, early applications to some selective schools, like Yale, saw a slight dip in the first test-flexible admissions cycle. This suggests students may be hedging their bets by applying to a broader range of schools rather than concentrating on highly selective institutions.
First-Generation and Low-Income Students: A Growing Presence
The Common App highlighted a 19% increase in first-generation applicants and a 13% rise in fee-waiver-eligible students. Such changes underscore the effectiveness of outreach programs targeting underserved populations. Institutions must ensure robust support systems for these students, from pre-college programming to on-campus resources.
Regional Growth: The Southwest Emerges as a Hotspot
Applications from the Southwest surged by 29%, led by Texas and West Virginia. Colleges in these regions may experience increased demand, necessitating strategic differentiation by applicants. Regional dynamics are also shaping international admissions: while international growth slowed overall (+5%), surges from countries like Bangladesh (+51%) and Kazakhstan (+30%) reveal opportunities for targeted outreach.
Renewed Interest in Test Scores
For the first time since 2021, more applicants submitted test scores than did not, despite widespread test-optional policies. This trend signals a growing perception of the value of standardized testing, as students aim to bolster their applications. For international applicants, data shows an increase in early applications to U.S. institutions, driven by perceptions of test scores as a differentiator in competitive pools. But, not at all schools. International students led the charge in Yale’s decrease in early applicants, dropping approximately 30 percent compared to domestic applicants, which dropped approximately 9 percent.
Public Universities Gain Favor
Applications to public universities grew at a faster rate (+12%) than to private ones (+8%), reflecting a shift toward affordability and accessibility. Institutions such as the University of California system remain top choices for both domestic and international applicants, emphasizing the need for applicants to balance prestige with practicality when crafting their lists.
Broader Opportunities Beyond Highly Selective Institutions
Interestingly, growth slowed at the most selective institutions (+5%) compared to a robust 11–12% growth at less selective colleges. This trend aligns with a broader acknowledgment that excellent education and career opportunities exist beyond the Ivy League and other elite schools (see, for instance, the popularity of the “New Ivies.”) Students are increasingly looking beyond prestige, focusing on fit and value.
