Crunch Time: Finalizing Your UC Application

Counting down the days until the December 1 deadline for your application to the University of California? Take a breath: you have time to elevate your application and give yourself the best chance of admission to your top-choice campus. Whether you are proofreading your PIQs or scrambling to fill the 20 slots for activities and awards, we have some guidance on how your application will be reviewed and helpful tips to finish strong and apply with confidence.

CRAFTING A STRONG UC APPLICATION

The University of California helpfully provides clear and specific information about how they review the nearly 250,000 applications they receive annually and what standards guide their selection processes (keep in mind: you can apply to any and all of the 9 campuses that teach undergraduates, but each UC makes its own admissions decisions). With no test scores or letters of recommendation to consider, what makes for a strong UC application? As you might expect, your academic record will receive a lot of attention. Let’s zoom in on what this means.

  • What you might not know is that the UCs do not consider your grades from 9th-grade classes when calculating your GPA. So, if you had a rough start to high school, no problem. The UC GPA calculation begins with classes taken the summer after 9th grade through the summer after 11th grade.
  • Have you heard about A-G approved courses? If you are not a California resident, this concept may be new: these are specific high school subjects required for admission to the UC or CSU (California State University) system. Now is a good time to check if you have met these. Two that might trip students up are the requirement of two consecutive years of a language other than English and one year of coursework in a visual or performing art.
  • Going above and beyond academically will push your application forward. This means taking courses beyond the minimum number required; presenting a strong senior schedule of courses; achieving the highest grades possible in your courses; taking a maximum number of advanced, honors, and/or AP courses; performing at the highest level within your school as demonstrated by rank or special awards; marked academic improvement over time; and showing your academic chops through academic projects, publications, and/or achievements.

Given that your academic record will be scrutinized, make sure that your PIQs shine a bright light on your academic interests and achievements. Be sure to select PIQ #6 as one of the four questions you answer: “Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.” This prompt provides a great opportunity to expand on your love of marine biology, data science, or German expressionism by detailing what you’ve done to learn more about your subject, how you think about it, and where you hope it leads you in college and beyond.

UC APPLICATION: POWER OF THE PIQS

Speaking of PIQs, these “personal insight questions” should do just that: give admissions readers insights into you as a person—in all your complexity and multi-dimensionality. Make sure each essay conveys a different strength, a unique character element, or a pursuit or activity that shows your growth. If you feel you must write about the same topic in two essays, ensure the reader’s takeaways are distinct. For example, if you use PIQ #6 to describe how you pursued your interest in politics by campaigning tirelessly for your local congressional candidate, and you want to use that experience again in PIQ #1 to highlight how your leadership experience positively influenced others, use different examples and anecdotes in these essays so readers will feel they are gaining completely new insights into you as a person.

UC APPLICATION: ACTIVITIES & AWARDS

What are you most proud of outside the classroom? This is what the activities and awards section is for. For some students, that’s the commitment they’ve demonstrated through a part-time job for the past three years. For others, it’s a national-level award for speech and debate. Start with the most impactful activities and awards—ideally those related to your intended academic major—to make the strongest impression and frame the rest of your list. Those that you spent less time on or were more recreational, like sports and low-level clubs, should fill out the bottom of your list. Think like an admissions officer: While you might have spent four years playing tennis in high school, how relevant is this to your future success as a UC student if you are not a recruited athlete? This section tells its own story about you, so make sure it reflects what you care about and what kind of an impact you’ve made on your school and community. Admissions officers will consider this a forecast of what kind of active community member you will be in college and what kind of alumna/us you will be in the future.
