Columbia Acceptance Rate: Class of 2029

Columbia University, a private Ivy League institution located in the heart of New York City, is one of the most high-profile schools at the center of controversy as colleges nationwide face sweeping federal funding freezes. Recently, TTA President Dr. Elizabeth Doe Stone was featured in New York Magazine’s cover story, Inside Columbia University’s Complete Surrender to Trump.

“For parents, Columbia used to feel like a safe prestige play. And now it might be a talking point they’d have to explain at a family dinner,” she said.

COLUMBIA ACCEPTANCE RATE: CLASS OF 2029

The university did see a slight increase in its acceptance rate for the Class of 2029, according to the Columbia Spectator. Columbia College and the School of Engineering and Applied Science admitted 4.29% of applicants overall, from a pool of 59,616 applications. The Class of 2028’s acceptance rate was 3.85%.

The undergraduate schools received 5,872 early decision applications, a 2.28% decrease from last year’s applicant pool. Top Tier Admissions co-founder and CEO, Mimi Doe, spoke to CNN last year about how pro-Palestinian campus protests could affect enrollment and likely resulted in higher waitlist activity.

About half of the Class of 2029’s admitted students will receive financial aid. Data is not yet available for the separate Early Decision and Regular Decision acceptance rates.

The Class of 2029 is the second to be admitted after the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action programs. During last year’s admissions cycle, the percentage of incoming Black first-year students fell from 20% to 12%, while the percentage of Asian American and Pacific Islander first-year students rose from 30% to 39%.

Columbia University remains the only Ivy League institution to go permanently test-optional. Columbia’s Testing Policy states: “Based on an internal study encompassing multiple years of performance data, we found that test-optional admissions—which we provisionally introduced in 2020-2021 due to the pandemic—did not lead to a diminishment of the academic performance of our admitted classes or the academic success of our enrolled students. Thus, as we design our application and its requirements to afford the greatest possible opportunity and flexibility for students to represent themselves fully and showcase their academic talents, interests and goals, standardized testing remains an optional component of our application.”
