After surviving the academic marathon of junior year, with its gauntlet of APs, SAT/ACT prep, and college visits, many high school seniors are already feeling the weight of college application season. One glance at a growing college list, and it hits: an avalanche of supplemental essays asking you to bare your soul in 200-300 words, declare eternal loyalty to each school, and articulate your life’s purpose…over and over again.
The good news? There are schools out there, both small liberal arts colleges and large research universities, that don’t require any supplemental essays. That’s right: zero extra writing. Just the Common App.
Might as well toss in an application, right? You’re not the only one thinking of rounding out your college list with these lighter-lift applications, so it’s important to ensure your application and Personal Statement are top notch!

WHY SOME SCHOOLS SKIP THE SUPPLEMENTS
Schools with no supplemental essays often have strategic reasons for keeping things simple:
- Boost Application Numbers: The easier it is to apply, the more students apply, and the lower their acceptance rate is.
- Northeastern received a record-breaking 105,092 applications for their Class of 2029!
- Ease Admissions Processing: With fewer essays to read, admissions teams can manage higher volumes.
- Increase Accessibility: Removing extra essays can help level the playing field for under-resourced applicants.
But just because an application is easy to submit doesn’t mean it’s easy to stand out.
COLLEGES WITHOUT SUPPLEMENTAL ESSAYS: WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
Without supplemental essays, you lose a prime opportunity to show schools why you’re a great fit. That puts more pressure on the parts of your application that are required, especially your:
- Common App Personal Statement
- Academic record
- Extracurriculars and honors (What we call an Activity List)
Common App Intensive
Get into your dream school.
If you’re applying to a school without supplemental essays, be strategic. Make sure your Personal Statement truly reflects your voice and values and that your application as a whole, highlights how you’ve made an impact. Be sure to build a balanced list so you’re not leaning too heavily on “easier” applications that may be deceptively competitive due to the high volume of uber-qualified applicants. And be absolutely certain that your application strategy is on-point so you don’t waste your Early Decision option.

*Note: “A surprisingly common pitfall is investing significant time refining the main essay, only to rush through school-specific supplements near the deadline—a misstep that can seriously jeopardize even a high-achieving student’s chances of acceptance,” writes Heidi Steinmetz Lovette in Hidden College Essays, Pop-Ups, and Stealth Supplements. It’s essential to leave ample time to thoroughly research each school on your list, as many hide supplemental essay prompts in less obvious sections of their applications or websites.
