Boarding School Applications: Your Step-by-Step Guide

For families thinking strategically about college admissions, boarding school can be a transformative stepping stone. Many of the nation’s most selective colleges draw disproportionately from a small number of top private secondary schools (think Groton School, Deerfield Academy, Phillips Exeter Academy), what some call “feeder schools.” These institutions not only offer rigorous academics and creative, interdisciplinary curricula but also foster close, mentored relationships with faculty, an asset when it comes to letters of recommendation and intellectual development. Boarding schools can also be ideal environments for motivated students to gain independence, grow in maturity, and explore passions away from home.

Applying to boarding school is a multi-step process that requires planning, organization, and a deep understanding of what schools are looking for. Here’s a breakdown to help your family stay on track—whether you’re targeting 9th grade entry or applying for 10th or 11th grade.

BOARDING SCHOOL APPLICATION TIMELINE

Fall (September-November of School Year Before Applying, i.e. 7th grade for 9th grade entry) – Evaluate Goals

  • Reflect on goals: Identify what criteria are important to your family. Is there a certain program or facility that would be ideal?
  • Crowdsource: Do you have family or friends who you could speak to about their experiences at boarding schools?
  • Inquire for information: Join the mailing list of each potential school to initiate contact and begin a relationship with the admission officers.

Winter (December-February) – Getting Oriented and Building Credentials

  • Understand admission requirements: Make a list of requirements for each school to determine which exams your student will need to prepare to take. International students should note extra requirements like TOEFL (or other English exams).
  • Credential building: Are there any other activities or interests that your student wants to develop further to bolster credentials for the application process?
  • Recommendation consideration: Ensure your student maintains strong classroom performance and engagement to solidify relationships with potential recommenders.

SSAT Tutoring

Stressed about the SSAT?

Spring (March–May) – Early Planning Stage

  • Plan and register for SSAT or ISEE: Many schools require one of these standardized tests. Some schools may accept PSAT, SAT or ACT for older students also. Spring is a good time to begin preparation.
  • Request transcripts: Start tracking academic records and building a portfolio of grades and teacher feedback; check transcripts for accuracy.
  • Start touring (virtually or in person): Most schools offer spring tours, and it’s never too early to start.

Summer (June–August) – Foundation Building

  • Prep for the SSAT/ISEE: Have your student take a diagnostic test, enroll in tutoring if needed, and plan for their first official test attempt in the fall.
  • Engage meaningfully: Students should attend academic camps, pursue a passion project, or volunteer—these experiences will help enrich their application essays and interviews.
  • Start writing: Have your student reflect on their strengths, interests, and reasons for applying to boarding school. These early ideas will shape their personal statement and short answer responses.
  • Begin working with a counselor: Get strategic about the application process with expert support, if available. Top Tier’s Private Counseling programs and our Top Tier Futures programs (starting at grade 4) will support your family through the process at any stage.

Fall (September–November) – Application Season Begins

  • Narrow the school list: Finalize where your student will apply and note deadlines (some priority deadlines begin in November).
  • Take the SSAT/ISEE: Most students test in early fall.
  • Request recommendations: Reach out to current teachers/coaches for letters. Be sure to give them ample notice.
  • Begin applications: Most schools use platforms like Gateway to Prep Schools or SAO. Start early and stay organized.
  • Schedule interviews: Many schools require interviews (virtual or in person). Be prepared with questions and talking points.

Winter (December–January) – Final Push

  • Submit all remaining applications: Most schools have deadlines in early to mid-January. Don’t wait until the last minute.
  • Send score reports and transcripts: Confirm all materials have been sent and received.
  • Complete interviews: If not already done, wrap up by mid-January.
  • Thank your recommenders: A handwritten note goes a long way.

Spring (February–March) – Decision Time

  • Hear back from schools: Most decisions are released in early to mid-March.
  • Attend revisit days: If accepted to multiple schools, attend events to help make your decision.
  • Enroll: Most schools require decisions by April 10. Be sure to review financial aid packages and any additional paperwork.

FINAL TIP

Start early, stay organized, and keep the lines of communication open. The boarding school admissions process is competitive, but with the right support and structure, your student can find a community where they’ll thrive.
