Review of Class of 2018 — Entering Fall 2014
Brown University
Brown University admitted 2,619 students to the Class of 2018, with 583 through early decision. 30,342 applications were received for regular and early decision admissions slots, an increase over last year’s pool of 28,919 applications. The rates of acceptance were 8.61 percent for the combined rounds and 18.88 percent for the Early Decision round only Last year, for the Class of 2016, Brown University admitted 2,649 students out of the 28,919 applications it received for an overall 9.16 percent admit rate in the combined rounds and 18.6 percent for the Early Decision round only.
Columbia University
For the Class of 2018, Columbia accepted 2,291 from 32,952 applications. The acceptance rate of 6.95 percent was slightly higher than the previous 6.9 percent when Columbia admitted 2,311 from 33,531 applications. Two years ago, the Class of 2016 admitted 7.4 percent. In this admission cycle, Columbia received 3,296 early decision applications and accepted about 650 students for an admission rate just below 20 percent. In its fourth year of using the Common Application, Columbia remained below the 34,929 applications submitted for the Class of 2015.
Cornell University
According to its Office of Admissions and Enrollment, Cornell has received an all-time high of 43,041 applications for freshman admission to the Class of 2018, a 7.5 percent increase over 2013, when just over 40,000 applications were received. The overall admit rate reported by Cornell is 14 percent, slightly down from last year’s admit rate of 15.2 percent. Cornell admitted 6,019 applicants with 4,694 regular decision applicants and 1,325 Early Decision applicants. Cornell admitted 28 percent of Early Decision applicants, but only accepted 12 percent of applicants for regular admissions. The numbers indicate that this year’s admissions cycle was the most selective it has ever been in the University’s history. Cornell denied 31,235 students admission to the University, versus 28,481 from last year.
Dartmouth College
Dartmouth College extended offers of admission to 2,220 applicants for its Class of 2018. The applications decreased from by more than 3,000 to a total of 19,296, representing a 14 decrease. The acceptance rate of 11.50 percent also increased from the 10 percent in 2013. The total number of accepted students includes the 469 admitted through the early decision process in December. Admissions officers expect to enroll approximately 1,110 students in the Class of 2018. Last year, Dartmouth College accepted to 2,252 applicants from a pool of 22,416 for its Class of 2017.
Harvard University
For its Class of 2018, Harvard received a total of 34,295 applications compared to 35,023 for the Class of 2017. The school admitted 2,023 students resulting in an overall admissions rate of 5.9 percent, which is slightly higher than last year’s 5.79 percent. In the early round, Harvard University received 4,692 applications and accepted 992, for an admit rate of 21.14% of its SCEA applicant pool. The SCEA admit rate is substantially higher than regular decision acceptance rate below 4 percent. The Class of 2018 reflects the excellence achieved by the students of an increasingly diverse America as record numbers of African-American and Latino students, who constitute 11.9 and 13 percent of the admitted class, respectively.
MIT
MIT admitted 1,419 students out of 18,357 applicants for the Class of 2018, for an acceptance rate of 7.73 percent. In its early round, MIT admitted 612 students out of 6,820 applications, the lowest rate of acceptance in an early round among its peer group composed of the Ivy League and Stanford. In 2013, MIT admitted 1,548 students out of 18,989 applicants for the Class of 2017.
Princeton University
For the Class of 2018, Princeton admitted 1,939 out of 26,641 applicants for an admission rate of 7.3 percent. Princeton University received 3,854 early action applications and accepted 714 applicants. Last year, Princeton admitted 1,931 applicants for an admission rate of 7.3 percent. In the early action round, the university received 3,810 applications and accepted 697 applicants.
Stanford University
Stanford University received an unprecedented 42.167 (up from 38,838) applications and offered admission to a low 2,138 (down from 2,210) applicants for its undergraduate Class of 2017. The figure, which includes 748 candidates admitted in December through Stanford’s Restrictive Early Action program, represents an admission rate of below 5.07 percent. This rate, the most competitive in the university’s history and the lowest in the nation for the second year reinforces Stanford’s position as the most selective research university. The early acceptance rate for the Class of 2017 was below 11 percent. Last year, Stanford admitted 2,210 students out of 38,838 applicants for admission to the Class of 2017 for an overall admission rate of 5.69%.
University of Pennsylvania
For the Class of 2018, Penn admitted a total of 3,551 students from 35,868 applications. The number of applications increased by close to 15 percent. Penn’s overall acceptance rate dipped to 10 percent, a decrease over previous years. Out of the total 3,551 admitted, 1,299 students were admitted through the early decision round. The admission rate for the ED round was slightly above 25 percent. Last year, the University of Pennsylvania accepted 12.1 percent of the 31,280 applications it received for the Class of 2017.
Yale University
Yale accepted 1,935 students to its Class of 2018 from a record pool of 30,932, compared to 1,991 out of 29.610 last year. The admission rate for the Class of 2018 was 6.26 percent, down from 6.72 percent. The SCEA round accounted for 735 acceptances out of a pool of 4,750 applications.
