Asian Americans and College Admissions

Handprint

We work with many Asian and Asian American students. We are dismayed by the level of discrimination they face in the competitive college admissions process. But, just as universities seek “diverse student bodies” (not 100% Asian for example), Asian students should be more “diverse” in their selection of schools. Rather than just honing in on Harvard and Yale and Stanford, pick ED schools with top academic programs like Amherst, Williams, Carleton, Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Emory, Middlebury etc. which takes one out of the crazy “single choice early action” frenzy, which many Asian applicants are in. We help our Asian students distinguish themselves by not looking so “stereotypically Asian” in terms of what academic areas they pursue, and by helping them select an admissions strategy that takes them out of the all-Asian fray of SCEA.
